In late 2002/early 2003, I began my AVCE (Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education, similar to an A-Level) ICT Unit 3 coursework. The task was to use Microsoft Excel to come up with a speadsheet that made use of at least six advanced features of Microsoft Excel, and served a useful purpose. While I was thinking about what I could do, my Grandad told me about his friend, who was President of the Durham Senior Cricket League. This gave me an idea. Would it be a good project if I produced a spreadsheet for a cricket league administrator to use to keep track of how the different teams in the league were progressing? I suggested it to Mr. Thompson, my ICT teacher, who said that it would be very complicated, but if I could pull it off, it would be an excellent project. I have never turned down a challenge, especially if there is any suggestion that I can't do it, so I accepted this one, and the DSCL Score System was born. In the next few months, the DSCL Score System went through 65 versions, finally reaching the Exam Board deadline, and being submitted, along with the accompanying documentation, as the DSCL Score System Version 6.5. During the 2004 summer holiday, I was able to meet my Grandad's friend and show him my work. He said that it was very good, and he told me that there were about 120 cricket clubs in the Durham area alone, and that there was a huge demand for an affordable program for monitoring player performance. He also said that if it were possible to modify the DSCL Score System to handle individual clubs and players, instead of a whole league, it would be very welcome. Once again, I accepted the challenge, and four long days later, the Schofield Cricket Club Score System was finished. Since then, I have been updating the documentation whenever I have had a free minute, and, as A-Levels involve a lot of work, I haven't had very many. Now it is completely finished, I have decided to release it as SHAREWARE. This means that you are welcome to download it and try it, but if you intend to use it for your club, you are requested to pay a measly sum of £10. This once-off payment would show your appreciation for all my hard work, and I hope that the program is useful.
I enoyed writing it, even if it was very frustrating at times (especially the original one). The DSCL Score System gained me a Very High 'A' grade in Unit 3, so it was worth all the effort in the end.
